Yashtimadhu is generally safe to consume in small doses, but may have side effects if used in large quantities or for long periods of time. The primary worry is about glycyrrhizin, which may lead to sodium retention and a drop in potassium. In susceptible persons, Yashtimadhu (Mulethi) can cause excessive blood pressure, water retention, muscle weakness, cramps, headache or irregular heart rhythms. Can also interact with certain medicines, such as diuretics, blood pressure medicine, corticosteroids, and some heart medicine. Medicinal use should be avoided in people suffering from hypertension, kidney disease, heart disease, and low potassium unless prescribed by their health care provider.
